Jean P. Shepard
Jean Shepard was our inspiration for founding a legacy society. A CASA Advocate for nearly eight years, she was always kind, gentle, and determined. Her advocacy was life-changing for eight children ranging in age from less than one year to sixteen. She volunteered until health needs forced her to stop in 2013.
Eleven years after she retired, we found out that despite her personal struggles, Jean never forgot Piedmont CASA and the struggles of the children she served. When she passed in February 2024, she left us a generous bequest. Today, her legacy is helping children in foster care change their stories of trauma into stories of stability and hope.
Jean's bequest was quiet, thoughtful, and determined, just like her. It will inspire hope for years to come by ensuring that children in foster care have the support of people like Jean, seemingly ordinary people who do extraordinary work.
Choose the planned gift that's right for you
Bequests
Bequests are one of the simplest, most impactful, and most popular ways to make a planned gift. It can allow you to make a larger gift to Piedmont CASA while letting you preserve assets during your lifetime. You can specify a specific amount of money be directed to Piedmont CASA, or a percentage of your estate, or the remaining value of your estate. To make a bequest, simply include Piedmont CASA in your will or trust.
IRA Rollover/Qualified Charitable Distribution
If you are 70+ years old you can fund gifts with required minimum distributions, or with a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Each eligible IRA owner can exclude up to $105,000 in QCDs from taxable income. Talk to your IRA custodian today about making a direct payment to Piedmont CASA through a QCD. Piedmont CASA is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and our EIN is 54-1704064.
Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets
As part of an estate planning strategy, a direct contribution of retirement assets to Piedmont CASA can be very tax efficient. Unlike other inheritances that can be passed to heirs free of income tax, distributions from inherited retirement plans are taxable as ordinary income. As much as 75% of the value can be lost. When you name Piedmont CASA as the beneficiary, you ensure that your gift goes tax-free to support the work you believe in - and you can leave your heirs other assets that are not as highly taxed — like stocks, bonds, and real estate.
Appreciated Securities
Have a lasting impact on children’s lives for years to come by donating appreciated stocks, mutual funds, or bonds. It's an efficient way to contribute to Piedmont CASA that can also provide you with significant tax benefits.
